It’s a Marvel or Not

With the impending release of the latest Avengers movies currently in production, I couldn’t help but think back to the first Iron Man film and the ensuing dawn of what came to be known as the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It was quite the time to be alive for a life long comic book fan.   Sure,we had Donner’s Superman and Burton’s Batman but they were accompanied by the usual “ZAP POW Holy Cinema Batman!” headlines that told the sad truth-society thought our hobby was for kids. Now we had films with stories we knew but the rest of the world didn’t, and knowing made us cool instead of nerdy. That’s why “Wonder Man ” was such a disappointment to me.

When the series was announced I was all ready to tell the story of Simon Williams, the rival industrialist to Tony Stark who gained superpowers with the help of the evil Baron Zemo to infiltrate and destroy the Avengers. He eventually had a change of heart and died on the side of the angels.

But now Sìmon is a marginal actor who must keep his power secret so he can star in a movie about the fictional character Wonder Man.

What was wrong with the story I remember ? It getting tossed aside makes me feel, well…nerdy.
